Program story
Commercial suborbital human spaceflight is not a single vehicle class. Virgin Galactic developed a piloted spaceplane system built around air launch, rocket boost, feathered reentry, and runway landing. Blue Origin developed an autonomous capsule and booster that launch vertically and recover separately.
The missions are short compared with orbital flight, but operationally dense. Crews train for high acceleration, emergency procedures, a brief microgravity interval, and rapid return. Researchers must compress hands-on experiment work into minutes rather than days.
Together the programs produced a large and varied human-spaceflight roster, including pilots, company instructors, scientists, educators, artists, explorers, sponsored participants, and private customers.
