Program story
Soyuz 28 carried Aleksei Gubarev and Czechoslovakia's Vladimír Remek to Salyut 6 in March 1978. Remek became the first person in orbit who was neither a citizen of the Soviet Union nor the United States.
A rapid series of visiting missions followed, carrying research cosmonauts from Poland, East Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, Vietnam, Cuba, Mongolia, and Romania. Soyuz T-11 later carried India's Rakesh Sharma to Salyut 7.
The flights combined diplomacy with practical station science and multinational crew operations, anticipating the increasingly international Mir program and the partnership model later used aboard the ISS.
