Program story

MOL was publicly described as a military laboratory for studying human usefulness in orbit. Its classified purpose was high-resolution reconnaissance using a large camera system managed through the National Reconnaissance Office.

OPS 0855 launched in 1966 and tested a Gemini B capsule with a hatch through its heat shield plus an adapted laboratory test article. It remained the program's only spaceflight.

Seventeen astronauts were selected in three groups. MOL was canceled in 1969 before any crew launched; several members transferred to NASA and later flew the Space Shuttle.
