Program story
The X-15 program treated the boundary between aircraft and spacecraft as a flight-test problem. Three rocket-powered aircraft were carried beneath modified B-52s, released near 45,000 feet, accelerated for roughly 80 to 120 seconds, and then flown through high-altitude reentry to an unpowered landing.
Eight pilots crossed 50 miles on thirteen flights, qualifying for U.S. astronaut wings. Joe Walker alone crossed the 100-kilometer Kármán line, first on Flight 90 and then on Flight 91, which reached 108 kilometers and remained the highest X-15 mission.
The program's value extended beyond records. Its instrumentation, simulation, pressure suits, reaction controls, stability research, thermal data, pilot training, and operational discipline fed directly into later spacecraft and the Space Shuttle. Michael Adams' death on Flight 191 also preserved a hard lesson about automation, workload, control-system behavior, and high-energy reentry risk.
